WHAT IS THE PLANNING COMMISSION?

The Planning Commission:

  • Conducts public hearings and gives recommendations to the Township Board on rezoning requests and Zoning Ordinance amendments, additions or deletions.
  • Conducts hearings and is solely responsible for decisions on Site Plan Review and Special Use requests.
  • Is responsible for the development and approval of the Township's Master Plan.  A final draft is recommended by the Planning Commission, with the final approval now directed by the Township Board.

HOW DO PROJECTS GET ON THE PLANNING COMMISSION AGENDA?

Bruce Nickel, the Township Building Inspector and Zoning Officer, is available for pre-planning on any Building code or Ordinance questions that might be raised.

When applications, plans and related documents are submitted, Mr. Van Valkenburg puts the applicant on the next available agenda.  The Planning Commission conducts the hearing at a scheduled meeting date.  If required, a special hearing may be able to be scheduled at an additional cost.  Public notices as applicable are published, posted and/or mailed as required by State law.

WHEN ARE PLANNING COMMISSION MEETINGS?

WHO IS ON THE PLANNING COMMISSION?

Franklin Township has a seven member Planning Commission.  By State Law, one of those members must be appointed from the elected Township Board members.  The other six members of the Planning Commission are appointed to serve staggered three year terms.  Per their by-laws, Planning Commissioners can serve two consecutive three year terms, but must sit out at least one year following a six year stint before requesting any further re-appointments to that body.  Appointments are recommended by the Township Supervisor to the Board of Trustees for approval.  State law requires a diversity of interests to improve the community planning process, so the Supervisor does have the responsibility of seeking a wide range of interests in the appointment process.  Re-appointments are made in the fall prior to the date of each member's term expires.  A Chairperson, Vice-Chair and Secretary are elected each year.  Our current Planning Commission includes:
